The easiest way to travel between the North and South Islands is by taking the ferry. The South Island ferry port is the small town of Picton, which has a lovely bay and marina and about 2 square blocks of shops and restaurants. While picking up some groceries there, I ran into a Dutch couple whom we met while cruising in Tahiti. They were spending the cyclone season in New Zealand, as most Pacific cruisers do, and were passing through Picton on holiday. The cruising world is certainly small!
The ferries carry pedestrian passengers, vehicle travelers like us, truckers, and......SHEEP. At one time sheep out numbered humans in New Zealand by 8 to 1. Today that ratio is down to about 5 to 1, as the country has expanded its cattle industry and tried to diversify its economy.

There were more sheep on our ferry than people. |
