IDG Checks In

IDG checked in this afternoon and reported their position to be: 2 56.25 N 85 47.66 W. If you enter those coordinates into Google Maps you can see their location. They are about 350 miles from the Galapagos Islands and expect to make landfall on the island of San Cristobal Thursday morning.

Many of you have inquired how IDG is doing in light of the recent earthquake in Chile. They did not know about the quake and did not feel any tremors. Tsunamis do not form waves in the middle of the ocean, but rather move at enormous speeds deep underwater. It is only when the ocean floor rises near the coast that waves form and have the potential for more destruction. Regardless, I know they appreciate everyone's concern for their well-being.

Hopefully they will be able to update the blog with stories and photos from the Panama-Galapagos leg once they settle in on San Cristobal toward the end of this week. In the meantime, thanks for everyone who is following and keep up with the comments.

Thanks David! Good to know. Google maps shows them to be about half way to the Galapagos, but by now I'm sure they're much closer. They plan to hang out there for most of the month of March, right? I think I recall that's what your mom said.

Asia S. - They should be getting into the Galapagos this morning but I am sure they saw dolphins. Dolphins like to swim in front of boats because the wake created by the bow provides waves for the dolphins to surf and it makes it easier for them to swim.

Devon K. - Yes, when sailing overnight and for long distances you need to have a system so that at least one person is awake at all times and scanning the horizon for other ships.

Shelbi K. - Me too!
